I don't think so. Many pure devotees have lived outside the temple like in their own home. But I don't think that you're in Maya then. In ISKCON there are many fights going on and some devotees don't want to get into a fight so they don't live in the temple. And sometimes when you really have problems you can also do your devotional service at home. But then you don't get Sadhu Sanga
This question is difficult to answer. There is not an answer "yes" or "no". As others have said, where you are and your state of consciousness are two different things.
In relation to this idea:
First of all there was no Krishna Consciousness in the West.
Then there was Krishna Consciousness only in temples.
Then there were temples with congregations.
Now we are transitioning to the fourth phase: Communities with temples.
This morning in an airport I met a devotee from another country. He asked me: "Are you from the (local city) temple?"
This question is too old school. The correct question to ask people today is: "What community do you come from?"
I tried to be a "Temple devotee" at a Temple in Los Angeles, CA many years ago. I was critized and condemned for accidently waking up my female roomate a few times when I got up early to take a shower and go to Mongal Arotik. How dare I get up early and go to Mongal Arotik!!!!! Now when I visit a temple, I always rent a nearby hotel so I can go to Mongal Arotik in peace.
