Prabhupada had only mentioned this as a strict regulation for grihasthas living in the temple. I never heard his saying it anyone who lives outside of the temple, nor is it ever been a standard among Gaudiya math devotees or any other devotees. Prabhupada introduced it (an innovation) at the time when he introduced grihasthas to monastic lifestyle. Nowadays there are hardly any grihasthas who wish or are expected to live in the temple. There are still some. That was the whole trick of SP's ISKCON that was so effective.
