Could someone tell me what Srila Prabhupada said about devotes taking socilal welfare payments?

I have tried to find some quotes about it but couldn't find any.I read somewhere that he was strictly opposed to devotees taking any money from the government and that on one occasion he collected the food stamps from devotees and destroyed them.I would like to know the reasoning behind it too.

Very unlikely for Prabhupada to destroy anything of any value, or to refuse any money. Sounds like one of the tales from the fringe.

Regarding food-stamps and welfare, if we have to fabricate some lie, that is not good. It can be done only if it is completely honest.
