If we are not yet on this level, how can we in a practical way develop this....

that is why Srila prabhupada stressed so much service.
first beginning to respect others in ordinary dealings, sometimes we focus on chanting and forget basic tenets.
mind can trick us in thinking that we are great, while failing in ordinary common sense
To develop humbleness, book distribution is good, you, the customer and Paramatma, doing miracles to correct us and help them. It is really an ego-grinding experience and also you see that "karmis" are not really different than us, just that they do not know the philosophy. Also the NO! keep you in a straw-like state (albeit unwillingly) he, he

I was just listening to a lecture by Babhru dasa about this very aspect of our spiritual lives...one part of his answer was that we should associate with more advanced devotees by serving them....and not just more advanced devotees but all devotees and then we will be able to cultivate sincere humility by thinking that we are actually lower than the straw in the street and also become more tolerant than a tree.
